WHAT'S NEW ON THE OCRR SITE?

May 14th: David Weiss and Dan Abrams have forwarded us some sad news about the passing of one of our earliest riders.  Betsy Peters will be familiar only to the longest-tenured OCRR members; she hadn't ridden with us in quite a few years.  Even if you didn't know her, feel free to think kind thoughts and to visit her page of a web site administered by an organization devoted to the care of critically ill patients: Betsy.

May 14th: We've received great news about Malcolm "Muffin Man" Flowers, courtesy of Ed Rubinstein.  Malcolm got through major kidney surgery without incident and should be recovering as routinely as might be expected given the circumstances.  He's in room 616 of Garden Grove Medical Center until sometime this weekend, and will subsequently be recuperating at home.

May 13th: Our unprecedented torrent of great ride stories continues with an enjoyable contribution by Charles Chen.  You can read Chuck's account of riding the Central Coast Double Century over on the Bits & Pieces page.

May 12th: In view of the predicted scorching temperatures this weekend, we've turned the monthly 9 AM only weekend into an 8 AM only weekend, and once again changed Saturday's destination, this time to the Airport Circle Starbucks in Huntington Beach.

May 9th: There's a short special bulletin from Jess, below.

Who are the Orange County Rebel Riders??  We are a group of fun loving, slightly irreverent and somewhat politically incorrect bicycle riders whose passion is to ride in search of new routes and new places to eat.  We love to do both.

Our Eighth Anniversary Celebration, March 2006 (click to enlarge)

Rides start from Windrow Park in Irvine, California and we normally range between Long Beach to the north and Oceanside to the south.  Most rides have multiple routes to accommodate riders of differing abilities and interests, but usually all routes have the same destination, typically a coffee shop or sticky bun place.

The Rebel Riders are a fun group with many post-ride activities and frequent social events.  Everyone is invited to take part and offer suggestions for future rides and events.  One thing we really enjoy is welcoming new riders into our group.

We occasionally do bulk orders of official OCRR clothing, as enough folks show interest for us to place an order.  You can read about our clothing on the Clothing page, which is also linked from the FAQ page cited in the next paragraph.

We have compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions about riding with the Orange County Rebel Riders.  If you don't see an answer to your question, just email us.

Memorial Day Weekend
A Weekend of Celebration
And Remembrance

Well, who can deny that we aren't being entertained by current herd of politicians.  We also enjoy the freedom to pretty much come and go as we please, say what ever pops into our heads, ride our bikes and make fun of our elected (?) officials.  All of this fun and frolic has come at a very high price, paid for by our young men and women through out the many conflicts of the past and present.

During the weekend of May 24th, 25th and 26th we will be honoring those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom as well as those that are continuing to stand fast against those that would love to take those freedoms away.

We will also be celebrating our tenth birthday (and "they" said we wouldn't last more than three months) on Sunday May 25th with a special group picture before the ride and then a gala party at the Claim Jumper on Culver and Alton right after the ride. The Party will begin at 11:30. Whether you've been riding with us on a regular basis or not, this is a party of all of the OCRR family.

This will also be the "official" welcome home party for our two very own returning heroes: Gunny Russ and Top Sergeant Dan.

The special schedule for Sunday, May 25th will be:

8:00 Everyone try to be at the park, Please wear your OCRR jersey, The new one, or the yellow eagle. We will form up to take a group picture. Arthur will have his big mamu camera with tripod so it should be a good one

8:30 The Rides will leave

11:30 Meet at the Claim Jumper, Culver and Alton, Irvine for gala OCRR Tenth Anniversary Party

Memorial Day
Monday, May 26th
All Rides will start at 9 AM

Two routes will take us along the coast to Huntington Beach. This being Memorial Day, I would encourage everyone to wear a jersey that honors those that have paid the price for our freedoms.

A Bulletin from Jess, April 28th

Routes and Destinations

As we have seen over these past two weekends, the weather is unpredictable.  I am checking the weather sites during the week to make sure that we will have comfortable riding conditions during our ride days.  Since we all know the reliability of the weather weenies I take their "predictions" as a guide.  My "cut off" temperature is 80 degrees.  So any predicted temps are close to that I will change the destinations to the coast.  My suggestion is that you check the routes and destinations on Wednesday evenings as I should have everything finalized by then.

An example of this would be this weekend.  We are destined to ride to Dana Point on Saturday; however, in order to get to Dana Point 80% of the route is still an inland route.  So if I see that the predicted temps are going to be close to 80 degrees or above I will change our routes to include a much greater percentage of coastal riding.

Another problem that we face is the never ending road construction (or is that destruction).  What is happening on University is a good example.  I will do my very best to route us out of harm's way and in so doing we might find ourselves on the same routes leading out of The People's Republic of Irvine several weekends in a row.

So bear with me.  By the time Thursday morning rolls around the routes and destinations for that weekend should be finalized and posted on the website.

The OCRR Website

Remember that our website is very fluid and ever changing site.  Everything is subject to change at a moments notice so keep a close eye and stay alert.  Arthur does a magnificent job of keeping everything up to date and his dedication to making this the best cycling website around is something to be proud of.  Let's not let his hard efforts go to waste: READ THE SITE!!!!

Remember that, after all, we are The Rebel Riders and "we don't got no stinkin' rules.

The Rebel Rider Rebelettes

Many of the ladies within the rebel family have chosen ride wearing a new pink jersey during the month.  Actually this is a pretty cool idea and shows off the diversity within the Rebel Family.  I also think that it would be neat to include a "Rebelette Jersey" day during the month.  So, to that end, I am going to make the third weekend of the month the Rebellete Jersey Weekend.  Since all of the rides are starting at 9 AM on that weekend it will be a great opportunity to have all of the pink jerseys riding en masse.

Cruisin' the Conejo and The Ojai Valley Century

These two rides will be coming up in May.  I would very much like to see the Rebel family riding as a group at both events.  Let's all meet at the start at 8 AM for both rides, wearing the OCRR jerseys, and make a great showing.
